The First Squares Dishcloth (knit)

Beginner · one evening · one skein of worsted cotton

The dishcloth is the perfect first project: small, forgiving, and useful the day it comes off the needles. Garter stitch — knit every row — means there is nothing to count and nothing to memorise, and cotton yarn makes it a cloth you will actually reach for.

You will need

One skein of worsted-weight cotton yarn (about 100–120 yds), one pair of US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles, scissors, and a yarn needle for weaving in the ends. That is the whole list.

Make it

1. Cast on 38 stitches, leaving a tail of about 10 cm. (The long-tail cast-on tutorial walks you through it slowly.)

2. Knit every stitch of every row. This is garter stitch — the fabric will look bumpy on both sides, which is exactly right for a dishcloth.

3. Keep going until the piece measures about 19–20 cm (7½–8 in) from the cast-on edge — roughly square.

4. Bind off loosely, cut the yarn leaving a 10 cm tail, and weave both tails in with the yarn needle.

5. Done. Wash it, use it, and notice what your hands just learned: an even edge, steady tension, and a finished object in one evening.
