Which pattern should I start with?
Three quick questions about what you have on hand and how much time you want to spend — answer them honestly and start with the shelf that matches your answers.
Question 1: How much yarn do you have on hand?
A single skein (less than ~250 yds): think small and finishable — bookmarks, cozies, dishcloths, charms. One skein is a whole project if you choose the right one.
A few skeins (roughly 250–700 yds): hats, scarves, cushion covers, and market bags live here — a weekend’s worth of making.
A whole stash (700+ yds to spend): throws, shawls, and garments. Let the yarn choose the pattern.
Question 2: How much time do you want to spend?
A single evening: pick a one-sitting make and enjoy finishing. A weekend: a couple of days of casual stitching — a hat, a bag, a set of coasters. A week or more: take your time with a throw, a shawl, or your first sweater.
Question 3: How would you describe your skill level?
Pick the level you are comfortable with right now, not where you would like to be next year. Beginner (first few projects): garter stitch and single crochet are enough. Easy (basics feel automatic): add simple shaping. Intermediate: cables, colorwork, lace, and shaping are all fair game. Experienced: anything in the catalog.
